Open Mic - January 2020

It's strange to think that one of our most recent Friends of Chorley Library events was the Open Mic night in January 2020 - way over a year ago! We helped out at a few library events before lockdown, but this was one of the last big night we hosted as the Friends group, complete with our legendary gin bar of course!

It's now been so long that we're starting to feel nostalgic for those times pre-lockdown when we could relax at the library with a stiff drink and watch some brilliant local talent perform for us, and we realised that we never shared any photos of the Open Mic night! It was an excellent evening, filled with singers, guitarists, poets, comedians and violinists too. The mood was just right, with dimmed lighting and atmospheric fairy-lights and lamps which, as per usual, were lent by members of the Friends of Chorley Library.

Thanks to everyone who came all that time ago, and for anyone who might be interested in the future, once things are properly back to normal we'll be talking about hosting more events - we can't wait!

We also held a raffle on the night - here is one of the lucky winners receiving her prize candle!

For these photos, we received permission where possible and on the night flyers & posters informed that photography was taking place - if you appear in a photo and would like it removed, please contact us and we'll remove it asap. Thanks!

Gin & Poetry at Chorley Library

Our gin and poetry night was an absolute joy! We had so many readers, from all walks of life, here in our library to bare their souls on stage for us!

We had such a huge variety of poetry, spoken word and short stories read out. Many from people who had written their own works, as well as a few who read their favourite poems for us all to enjoy. It was such a wonderful evening with a gorgeous atmosphere. We can't wait to host another one!

Gin & Poetry Night at Chorley Library: Friday June 28th

Join us for an evening of poetry and spoken word, performed by local poets, writers and entertainers!

It'll be in open-mic format, so anyone can perform. Turn up on the night with your reading or email friendsofchorleylibrary@gmail.com if there's a particular time slot you'd like. Flash fiction, poetry and prose absolutely encouraged!

The event is FREE - but as always, donations will be welcome!

We'll have a raffle! Gin bar! Friendly people! Due to the sale of alcohol and (potentially) adult themes in the poetry, this is an 18+ event. Please RSVP via Facebook or Eventbrite, and tell your friends about it!

See you there.

Mental Health & Anxiety Book Talk at Chorley Library

What an absolute treat it was to have Sue Knowles and Bridie Gallagher come to our library to talk about mental health and anxiety for us! Sue and Bridie were promoting their new book My Anxiety Handbook, which is illustrated by Friends of Chorley Library's own Emmeline Pidgen! Sue and Bridie are local psychologists who have written the book to help young people navigate anxiety.

The talk took us through strategies for coping with anxiety and we played a few fun games (which got everyone up and walking around the library!) to better illustrate some of the ways we deal with mental health issues.

It was such a hugely informative, warm and reassuring talk - thank you so much to them for coming along! It was a joy to organise this event with The Friends of Chorley Library, and we hope to do many more in the future!
